About Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Jobs
A Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is a credentialed technician licensed through a state veterinary board that uses the RVT title specifically. The clinical role itself matches what's generally called a veterinary technician elsewhere: supporting diagnosis and treatment through diagnostics, anesthesia monitoring, surgical assistance, medication administration, and ongoing client education throughout a patient's care.
Becoming an RVT typically requires graduating from an accredited veterinary technology program and passing the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), along with any additional state-specific requirements your board sets. Once credentialed, RVTs are expected to maintain continuing education hours to keep their license active, with specific renewal timelines and requirements varying by state.
RVT jobs exist across the same range of settings as technician roles generally: general practice, emergency and critical care, specialty referral hospitals, and research or academic institutions. Experienced RVTs sometimes move into lead technician, training, or practice management roles, or pursue a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) credential in a clinical area of interest, deepening their expertise without needing to change titles or employers.
If your state uses a different credentialing title, such as LVT or CVT, the role and requirements are functionally similar, just licensed under a different name. Reviewing your own state board's requirements directly is the most reliable way to confirm your exact title, renewal timeline, and any reciprocity rules if you're relocating from another state.
If you're relocating from a state that uses a different credentialing title, check your new state's reciprocity rules before applying, since most states recognize equivalent out-of-state credentials but the process and timeline for transferring your license can vary. Confirming this early avoids delays once you've found a role you want to pursue.
