About Veterinary Anesthesia Jobs
Veterinary anesthesiologists manage patient safety through every stage of a procedure requiring sedation or general anesthesia: pre-anesthetic risk assessment, drug selection, continuous monitoring of vital signs throughout the procedure, and managing a safe, comfortable recovery. This matters most for complex, high-risk, or prolonged procedures where anesthesia itself carries meaningful risk that needs careful, dedicated management.
Board certification in anesthesia and analgesia is achieved through the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA), requiring a DVM, an internship, and an ACVAA-approved residency, followed by board certification exams. Beyond the veterinarian role, anesthesia technicians, often credentialed RVTs, LVTs, or CVTs with additional anesthesia-specific training, play a central, hands-on role in monitoring patients under sedation throughout a procedure.
Veterinary anesthesia jobs are concentrated at specialty and referral hospitals, academic teaching institutions, and some larger general practices with a high volume of complex surgical cases that justify a dedicated anesthesia role rather than relying on the operating surgeon to manage both. Board-certified anesthesiologists often work closely with surgeons across multiple specialties, since safe anesthesia is foundational to nearly every surgical procedure performed.
Technicians interested in anesthesia specifically can pursue a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) credential in anesthesia and analgesia, a path that deepens expertise and opens more advanced opportunities without requiring the full DVM-level residency that board certification as an anesthesiologist demands.
Before applying, ask about the case mix and volume at a given practice, since a hospital doing a high volume of complex, high-risk surgeries will use an anesthesiologist very differently than one with a more routine surgical schedule. Understanding this helps set realistic expectations for the pace and complexity of your day-to-day work.
