About Veterinary Cardiologist Jobs
A veterinary cardiologist diagnoses and manages heart disease in companion animals: congenital heart defects, acquired valve disease, arrhythmias, and heart failure, using echocardiography and other advanced diagnostics alongside medical and sometimes interventional treatment. Cardiology is a board-certified subspecialty under the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).
Becoming board-certified in cardiology requires a DVM, an internship, and an ACVIM-approved cardiology residency, followed by board certification exams. As with other specialties, some listings specify "board-certified or residency-trained," considering candidates who've completed the residency even before finishing boards.
Veterinary cardiologist jobs are concentrated at specialty and referral hospitals, academic teaching institutions, and some larger multi-specialty practices with a dedicated cardiology service. Cardiologists frequently collaborate with internists and surgeons on cases involving heart disease alongside other complex medical conditions, since cardiac issues often intersect with broader systemic illness.
Given the specialized equipment and training cardiology requires, board-certified cardiologists remain in relatively limited supply nationwide, and teleconsulting or telecardiology roles, reviewing echocardiograms remotely for general practices without an in-house specialist, have become an additional path alongside traditional hospital-based practice, adding real flexibility to how the specialty can be practiced.
Before applying, ask about the specific equipment available, including echocardiography and any interventional capability, since this shapes both your day-to-day casework and the complexity of cases you'll be equipped to manage directly at a given hospital.
When reviewing listings, pay attention to whether a hospital offers interventional cardiology procedures such as pacemaker implantation or balloon valvuloplasty, since not every cardiology practice performs these, and this can meaningfully shape the range of cases you're able to treat directly.
