About Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) Jobs
A Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) is a credentialed technician licensed through a state veterinary board that uses the LVT title. The clinical role mirrors what's generally called a veterinary technician elsewhere: diagnostics, anesthesia monitoring, surgical assistance, medication administration, and direct patient care under veterinary supervision, carried out across a wide range of practice types.
Becoming an LVT typically requires completing an accredited veterinary technology program and passing the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), along with whatever additional requirements your specific state board sets for licensure. Maintaining the license generally requires ongoing continuing education, with renewal timelines and credit requirements varying from state to state.
LVT jobs appear in general practice, emergency and critical care, specialty referral hospitals, and research or academic settings. With experience, many LVTs move into lead technician or supervisory roles, or pursue a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) credential in a clinical area such as anesthesia, dentistry, or emergency and critical care, which can lead to more advanced responsibilities and specialized caseloads.
If you're licensed under a different title, such as RVT or CVT, the day-to-day responsibilities are functionally the same, just credentialed under a different state-specific name. Your state board's website remains the most reliable source for exact licensing, renewal, and reciprocity requirements if you're considering a move to practice in a different state.
If you're relocating from a state that uses a different credentialing title, check your new state's reciprocity rules before applying, since most states recognize equivalent out-of-state credentials but the transfer process and timeline can vary. Confirming this early avoids delays once you've found a role you want to pursue.
