About Veterinary Critical Care Jobs
Veterinary critical care covers the management of the most unstable, complex patients: those requiring intensive monitoring, mechanical ventilation, advanced fluid and blood product therapy, and close, often minute-to-minute clinical decision-making as a case evolves. The board-certified specialty, Emergency and Critical Care (ECC), is certified through the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC).
Becoming board-certified in ECC requires a DVM, an internship, and an ACVECC-approved residency, followed by board certification exams. Critical care roles also exist for DVMs without ECC board certification, typically staffing the ICU or critical care unit of a larger emergency or specialty hospital under the oversight and supervision of a board-certified specialist on staff.
Veterinary critical care jobs are based at 24-hour emergency hospitals and specialty referral centers with a dedicated ICU or critical care service. The pace is intense and often unpredictable, with patient status changing quickly and treatment plans adjusted in real time as new information comes in from monitoring and diagnostics.
This work suits DVMs who want to focus specifically on the sickest, most complex patients and who find the intensity and problem-solving of critical care genuinely engaging rather than draining, since the role asks for sustained, close focus during long, high-stakes shifts where the margin for error is often small.
Before applying, ask about staffing ratios and overnight coverage at a given hospital, since critical care work is considerably more sustainable with adequate support than when a single technician or DVM is managing several unstable patients alone. This detail matters as much as the caseload itself for long-term job satisfaction.
